With extreme colds in the winter most of the river actually turns into one huge ice flow. As the ice keeps freezing down, water is forced to flow above it, which in turn freezes again. Ice packs can end up many feet deep this way. As the spring melt comes and the ice breaks the river get's more than a little wild.
